Gold leaf is gold that has been beaten or rolled into an extremely thin sheet.<\/strong> It is so thin that it can be applied to surfaces using relatively simple techniques, yet the effect can be remarkably striking. Depending on how it is applied and what lies beneath it, gold leaf can appear bright and reflective or soft and aged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gold leaf has a long history in art. It has been used to decorate sculptures, religious objects, manuscripts, furniture and architecture. One of the most familiar examples is perhaps the gilded decoration found in religious paintings and icons, where the reflective surface of the gold could help create a sense of light and importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For an artist, gold leaf is interesting because it behaves very differently from ordinary paint.<\/strong> Paint adds colour to a surface, whereas gold leaf can actually change the way light behaves across the artwork. A single highlight or small area of gold can draw the eye towards a particular part of an image. In other works, the gold may become a much more dominant element, covering large areas of the surface and becoming almost a subject in itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is something slightly contradictory about gold leaf.<\/strong> It is associated with luxury and permanence, yet the material itself is incredibly delicate. A sheet of gold leaf can be so thin that it seems almost weightless. It takes a steady hand to work with it, but once attached to a surface it can become remarkably durable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Contemporary artists continue to find new ways of using it. Gold leaf can appear alongside abstract painting, sculpture, mixed-media work and even modern digital-inspired imagery. It doesn’t necessarily make an artwork traditional or historical. Used differently, it can be surprisingly modern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps that is the enduring appeal of gold leaf. It isn’t simply a way of adding the colour gold to an artwork.
